Welcome to the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation

Founded in 2008, the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation is a largely volunteer-run registered charity, dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about mesothelioma in Canada. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that is almost exclusively linked to asbestos exposure. The CMF supports mesothelioma patients and their families, as well as the development of a network of expertise in mesothelioma diagnosis, treatment and care across Canada. Learn more about us here.

Thank you to all who participated in our Holiday Mission for Meso Fundraising Auction

Tuesday, November 17, 8:00 am (MST) to Thursday, November 19th, 8:00 pm (MST)

The first Holiday Mission for Meso is now closed.  This was an exciting fundraising auction put on by the Calgary, Alberta chapter of the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation. Thank you to all who participated, supporting a worthy cause, getting some holiday shopping done and snagging some great items!

Anyone from across Canada and beyond was able to take part.  We hope all you hockey fans were able to bid on some of the exclusive hockey items!

What new Ontario-led research says about mesothelioma

Dr. Paul Demers (a member of the CMF's Scientific Advisory Committee), Alec Farquar and Lee Loftus (members of the CMF Board of Directors) are quoted in an article entitled "What new Ontario-led research says about mesothelioma". A summary of the research study "Mesothelioma: Epidemiology and Prognosis" (which compared cases in British Columbia and Ontario over a 25-year period, from 1993 to 2017) is expected to be posted on the Occupational Cancer Research Centre's website by the end of October 2020.

Johnson & Johnson to End Talc-Based Baby Powder Sales in North America

"The company has faced thousands of lawsuits from cancer patients who claim that its talc was contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, and that the company knew of the risks."

In a developing story, the New York Times is reporting that Johnson & Johnson announced today (May 19, 2020) that it is discontinuing North American sales of baby powder made with talc. According to the article, Johnson & Johnson "would wind down sales over the next few months, allowing existing bottles to be sold by retailers until they run out. Baby powder made with cornstarch will remain available, and talc-based baby powder will continue to be sold in other parts of the world."

On May 8th, The Star and The Record published "The Uncounted", a series of six investigative reports written by reporter Greg Mercer on the toll of occupational disease in Canada. CMF Board Chair Dr Eudice Goldberg is quoted in Part 2: Prevention and Part 6: Compensation. CMF Board Member Alec Farquar is quoted in Part 2: Prevention. The work of CMF Scientific Advisory Committee member Dr Paul Demers (Director of the Occupational Cancer Research Centre) is cited throughout and he is quoted in Part 1: Statistics, Part 3: Regulations, and Part 4: Diagnosis.

CMF online support groups for patients & caregivers

An important objective of our organisation is to support the emotional health of patients living with mesothelioma, as well as the people that care for them.  Currently, we offer a number of private, invite-only Facebook groups for mesothelioma patients, loved ones and bereaved to connect with one another, share experiences and seek support from others in similar situations.  

To join one of our groups, please follow these steps:
